Last week, I was really excited to have bought a half flat of Florida strawberries from the Farmer's Market for $12. They looked beautiful and smelled fantastic, so it was much to my dismay to find that the entire bottom layer had to be thrown out.
I used the top layer of strawberries for a barbeque we had that weekend, and the rest were in that "too mushy to eat, but not mushy enough to throw out" stage. I hated to waste them, so I used them to flavor applesauce.
I just tossed them in the food processor, blended until they were smooth, and added them to our unsweetened applesauce.
Little Guy will only ever eat plain, unsweetened applesauce, so that's what we always have on hand. I buy the GoGo Squeeze Apple Apple flavor for his school lunches, and he usually eats a bowl full from our jar at home nearly every night with dinner or for a night time snack.
I usually pack Hubby an applesauce with cinnamon added in a Glad Mini Round 4 oz container. Those little containers are so handy. I use them for everything.
The strawberry applesauce turned out really well! I find that when you try to buy flavored applesauce from the store, it tastes overly sweet and has way too many unnecessary ingredients in it. This recipe has 3, strawberries, apples, and water.

Mmmm... I love strawberries. I'm on a mission to cut out processed food and sugar so this is an excellent idea.
